What does a Direct Support Professional do?
Direct Support Professionals provide hands-on, person-centered support in homes and communities. Depending on the person being supported, the work can include helping with independent living skills, community activities, appointments, employment goals, transportation, communication, documentation, and other individualized objectives.
The New Jersey Department of Human Services describes DSPs as workers who support people with intellectual and developmental disabilities in achieving personal goals. New Jersey's Division of Developmental Disabilities oversees publicly funded home- and community-based services for tens of thousands of adults statewide.
