A Wheelchair That Can Go Beyond the Pavement: Planning a Fall Outing in NJ

Reviewed October 8, 2026. A fall outing does not have to mean watching everyone else head down the trail. New Jersey’s state-park accessibility resources include an option that may make a different kind of visit possible: a reservable all-terrain wheelchair at Wharton State Forest.

What makes this worth a look?

NJ State Parks describes Wharton’s Track Chair as an electric-powered wheelchair for visitors with mobility impairments, usable on select trails that standard wheelchairs may not reach. This is an existing park resource, not a newly announced October program.

Call before planning the trip

The park requires an advance reservation and accepts only one reservation per day. Call the Batsto office at 609-561-0024. A companion is required; both the visitor and companion sign a waiver. The park provides instructions and a map showing the permitted areas.

Ask staff about equipment suitability, transfers, companion responsibilities, available dates and current trail conditions before committing to the visit. A listing online is not confirmation that the chair is available on your chosen day.

Build the outing around the person

At Friendly Connections, we encourage starting with what the person actually enjoys. Would they like a short route, time to take photographs, or a quiet place to watch wildlife? Leave room to pause or change plans. A shorter outing can still be a worthwhile one.

Before leaving, check the forecast and park notices, identify restrooms and a meeting point, and agree on a return plan. Ask about the specific route rather than assuming every part of the park is accessible. Bring the everyday supplies and supports the person normally uses.

Discuss community-based support with us

We provide community-based disability services throughout New Jersey. If outdoor activities are among your goals, contact us to discuss authorized services, support needs and current staffing availability. The park handles its own equipment reservations; an FC service inquiry does not reserve a chair or guarantee an outing.
